For more than thirty years, Kemm Yates was an energy lawyer who practiced regulatory litigation and arbitration in matters primarily relating to the natural gas, oil and electricity industries. In 2018, he retired from Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP and joined the group of arbitrators and mediators that has become Western Arbitration Chambers.
As an advocate in the energy regulatory sphere, Kemm appeared as counsel before various Canadian federal and provincial tribunals, and at all levels of Superior and Appellate Courts. He represented energy utility, pipeline, producer and customer interests in diverse proceedings, including applications for approval of energy projects, tolls and tariffs hearings, and environmental and energy export cases.
During his years in private practice, Kemm acted as counsel or adjudicator in arbitration proceedings relating to legal contractual issues, natural gas and power pricing, pipeline tariffs and asset evaluation.
Kemm has arbitrated disputes involving myriad legal issues including the interpretation of contracts and statutes, damages and injunctive relief, as well as related issues of regulatory policy, asset evaluation and international energy pricing.
Kemm holds degrees from McGill University (Bachelor of Arts) and the University of Toronto (Juris Doctor), and is a member of the Law Society of Alberta.
