The Hon Ian Holloway is an arbitrator and mediator, as well as a senior Professor of Law at the University of Calgary.
Ian began legal practice thirty-eight years ago, with the Atlantic Canada firm of McInnes Cooper. He spent a number of years there before returning to graduate school, where he earned his LLM and PhD. In addition to his work in legal education, Ian spent eight years as a member of the Security Intelligence Review Committee and its successor, the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency where among other things, he mediated and adjudicated disputes involving national security and intelligence issues. He has been admitted to practice in Nova Scotia, Ontario and Alberta, and holds the rank of King’s Counsel in both Nova Scotia and Alberta. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute and a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management. He earned his LLB from Dalhousie University, his LLM from the University of California at Berkeley, and his PhD from the Australian National University. In 2022, he was awarded an honorary LLD by the Law Society of Ontario. In 2024, Canadian Lawyer magazine named him one of the twenty-five most influential lawyers in Canada.
Outside the law, Ian served twenty-six years in the Royal Canadian and Royal Australian Navies.
